A Winston-Salem native began oil painting by taking classes at Forsyth Tech in the late 80's. One previous activity was oil painting instruction for the Open Door to Art program conducted at First Baptist Church on 5th Street. Has received numerous awards in local area art shows including two Judge's Choice Awards at the former Dixie Classic Fair. Artwork in private collections includes commissioned oil paintings, pen and ink drawings and prints. The detail and accuracy in his artwork are the reflection of 40+ years as a draftsman in a construction related industry. The subjects of a lot of his artwork are vintage items that have been abandoned and structures that will be or have been demolished. His artwork been described as an artist creating images that stir emotions whether experimenting with different techniques of oil painting or doing a pointillist pen and ink rendering.

Marianne Hale is an emerging local artist from Winston Salem. She has completed and sold several offerings, and is especially drawn to painting landscapes. She studied with Marsha Thrift Marion of Winston Salem, NC, and Jane Noel Goodman-Smith of Noel's Art Studio, Lewisville, NC. She states: "For years, I have loved buying art supplies, but have struggled to just sit down and apply paint to canvas! Now that my former career path has changed, I desire to use these gifts to show God's beauty and truth to the world, and to bring Him glory. I am so very grateful to all the ones that have encouraged me on this path."

I'm 30 and have always enjoyed art. I began a more urban sketching approach last January on a trip to NYC and both of these drawings are within the last six months. Sketching has become a happy place for me, it grounds me in the moment and allows me to really soak in the space I'm visiting.

I am a retired CPA who found making pottery by chance. I explored some other ways to be creative such as watercolor painting and basket making. I found, however, that I am trying to incorporate other creativities I learned into pottery. Now I am even teaching Taste of Art (Sawtooth) and Hands on Clay (Intergenerational Center/Senior services).

My paintings are inspired by rural landscapes and seascapes. I strive to achieve a loose watercolor style where just enough detail is provided to convey the scene without overworking the medium. I try to be purposeful in my planning for a painting and bolder in my execution. The challenge for me is letting watercolor do what it does best and knowing when to stop.

Both of my pieces are about my childhood imaginary friend, my guardian angel. My grandmother would always tell me about the guardian angel that followed and protected me. I had always imagined her looking over me as I walked through the woods or flying outside my window as I rode in the car. My aim is to capture that child-like wonder and faith that we all had in the things we can no longer see.

My work, as I see it, is loosely figurative studies of nature. Nature finds its essence in the activity of living, with molecular structure in constant motion. Influenced by the dynamics of Impressionism and the further studies in Expressionism, I seek to express the emotion within myself that wraps around the objects I paint and draw. Most often I work from my photographic studies from my travels or from objects of nature in still life. Current works look at the topography, flora and fauna and the variety of spaces of the world I have been able to see in my travels. I also am an amateur gardener and collector of orchids and have done a few studies of the orchids in my collection and other garden flowers. These are executed in colored pencil, my latest choice of medium. It is a painstakingly slow process of layering color over color and it has changed the manner of my work from my earlier days when I worked only in oil and pastel. I have been studying art all my life, but the work and studies to accomplish skill to express myself have been a recent undertaking. Trained as an elementary teacher, and spending years as a crafts person and mother, I just now have the time needed to pursue my art in a more serious manner. I studied batik on cloth when I lived in Indiana and was the art coordinator at an elementary school when living in Missouri. I worked for many years as a teddy bear artist and teacher of the techniques. I have taken art classes at Sawtooth Center for Visual Design and Forsyth Technical Community College since moving to Winston-Salem. I have had a one person show in Raleigh and have shown with Associated Artists and Muddy River.

Art is color and I love color!! Art has always been a part of my life. From an early age my Father asked me to draw, color or paint something for him! It stuck with me! Even my chosen profession of 50 years as a florist was influenced by color, composition, focal, and designing nature's beauty to fill your life! During Covid art was my sanity and passion. Almost every day I painted with my son and grandson through social media. I love the colors I find in nature! Flowers are still a big part of my life because I choose to paint them!

Sara Reinthaler has always enjoyed making things with her hands in a variety of mediums, but discovered her love for working with wood in 2017, when she took a woodcarving class at The American Woodcarving School in New Jersey. Beginning with mostly relief carving using a mallet, chisels and gouges, she created works in both basswood and cottonwood bark. Upon moving to North Carolina in 2020, she joined the Triad Woodcarvers club where she has been honing her knife skills and learning from her fellow carvers. She loves to work on all different techniques and styles in wood art including marquetry, turning and pyrography. Artist statement: To me, creating out of wood is a very primal and human art. The ability to take something that grows from the earth and turn it into something from my imagination, seems like a magic trick. Using hand tools provide an almost meditative experience and perhaps that is why so much of my art has a bit of whimsy to it. I like to create things that make me smile, and I hope that my happiness shines through to others as well.

I work with wood because it is a medium that truly speaks for itself. Each board has a unique grain pattern, texture, and color - making it the ideal canvas to highlight nature's beauty. Each piece tells a story through the materials used whether it's wood milled from the property where I grew up, reclaimed trim from a 1900s farmhouse remodel, or scraps from other wood workers. My goal is to create unique and sustainable art that showcases natural beauty and gives new life to the material it is made from, while encouraging others to see the value and stories in reclaimed wood.

Being creative from a very early age, my mom would find me having fallen asleep while creating my latest artistic adventure with crayons. Always loving to paint, I began to spend more time painting with acrylics and watercolors after retiring from teaching. I am able to paint while also spending time with my husband and family. Painting allows me the opportunity to relax and bring attention to Gods beautiful earthly creations of landscapes and florals.

I have always had a love and insight for animals (my formal degrees are in Animal Science and Veterinary Technology); therefore, they are my primary muse. Inspired by an animals character especially in the eyes - I capture the emotion and communicate it through my work. Through color, patterns, and light, I create realistic, expressive portraits. My creations allow the viewer to visually feel the animals personality. I began seriously working in colored pencil in 2020, pastels in 2021 and my first-time painting with oils was in 2022. With little formal art training, my thirst for learning more about the mediums I use and the techniques that go with them is voracious. It is my training in the sciences that allows me to grasp the techniques quickly and in depth. My fascination with the details is the reason my style leans more toward photorealism. My artwork can be found in both public galleries and private collections across the United States.

After moving to Winston-Salem in 1998, I began taking watercolor classes with Alice Bess. She encouraged me to show my art and to join the Muddy River Art Association. I also joined an informal group, The Friday Painters, that meets a at South Fork Recreation Center on Fridays. This group of artists became an extended family and still meets. I appreciate the opportunities MRAA offers for exhibiting my art.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, in a family that liked to make things. I learned how to sew, I loved to draw and I loved clothing. My first year in college was as a Fashion Design Major at Pratt Institute and I then transferred to Carnegie Mellon University where I graduated witha BFA in Graphic Design. When we moved to Winston Salem I stayed at home with my kids and set up my first studio in our Ardmore home, but a few years later a real job as a graphic designer took all my time. Thirteen years later, I left the full-time job and became a part timer which gave me time to make art again. 1999-2019: Painting from life including painting en plein air, doing figurative and portrait work from life in the studio during this time was a great way to learn. Studying with lots of great artists in workshops using various mediums also gave me a good foundation. 2020-present: Collage and semi-abstraction has become my focus but I am still drawn to the same subjects I always loved: people and architecture

My artistic style is a fusion of abstract and realism, creating a unique and captivating visual narrative. I want to connect with people through art and communicate how the power of imagination and visualization can help create their own destiny.

Wood working has been in my blood since I was child. My father was a self-employed cabinet maker, and I was his helper. When I retired, I continued my love for wood with wood turning and furniture making. Along with my wife who is a potter, we established The Wood 'n Potter selling our local crafts in nearby markets and at festivals.

Years ago someone asked me why I choose to be an artist. The question took me by surprise. Choose? Most of us don't choose to be an artist, we just are. We don't decide to create we need to create. Art is not a career choice but simply life. Paint, brushes, pastels, they are as important to me as my fingers. Without my fingers I couldn't open a jar, but without my paint, brushes, and pastels I couldn't discover what's deep inside me. My paintings are representations of the world; not necessarily how they truly exist, but rather how I comprehend their existence. When I spread paint onto a canvas I create, yet, it is nothing more than the simple process of turning something deep inside into a physical presence. In the past I have studied architecture, worked as an illustrator and Interior Designer, raised a family, and as an army spouse I lived in different states and countries. As an extension of that world, my paintings often follow a similar path. Landscapes and cityscapes are my primary focus. Occasionally, I paint groups of people that I see as they react to the world around them, not as portraits but more like figurescapes. No mater the topic or the medium, when the observer views one of my paintings they are looking through a window into my world, my comprehension of reality.
